How can a boat sail upwind?
How can boats sail faster than the wind?
Why are eighteen foot skiffs always sailing upwind?

We introduce the physics of sailing to answer these and some other questions. But first:

A puzzle.

A river runs straight from West to East at 10 knots. A 10 mile race is held: the boats sail downstream, from West to East. The first heat is held in the morning, when there is no wind. The second heat is held in the afternoon, when there is a 10 knot wind from the West. In which heat are the faster times recorded?

Where is Phil…?

Update:
Phil made contact with a realative in Queensland and is making his way there now. The family doesn’t know how he is getting there. Thanks to everyone who showed the family support during this difficult time.

This post is VERY SERIOUS…

Phil Yeomans is a family friend of ours, and is the father of Melissa Yeomans who runs DeckHardware, one of our sponsors.

Phil is missing, and has been since Sunday night.

Popular MHYC sailor and industry identity Phil Yeoman’s whereabouts are currently unknown. Phil does not have his car or his mobile phone with him.

His daughter Melissa said today. ‘He left his home on Sunday night and we have had no contact with him since then.

‘What ever the reason we are concerned for his well being and would appreciate anyone that may have had contact with him to either contact Robyn Yeomans on 0418 209 215 or John Hurley through Middle Harbour Yacht Club 02 9969 1244.

‘We hope to hear from him soon and pray that he is safe.’

Care for your Gear

Wet Weather gear has become very technical over the past few years, and like any technical product needs to be serviced. What sets Musto HPX above other Wet Weather gear is that Musto uses GORE-TEX® trilaminate fabric.

Tri-laminate fabrics, having an inner ‘olliophobic’ layer (which repels sweat, insect repellent, sun screen etc) This layer protects the second layer which in essence is the working mid layer membrane. An external third layer Face fabric is then layered on top. This outer ‘face fabric’ is your coloured layer and allows water to bead off if coated correctly. This layer is extremely important as it has tiny microscopic hairs which like animal hair cause water to bead from the garment.

This is the crucial aspect that needs to be serviced as over time these hairs will flatten out. When these hairs flatten out this means the water sits on the fabric (or ‘wets out’). This is a common occurrence and leads many people to people think their garment is leaking. A good wash using our recommended products and warm tumble drier will rejuvenate these hairs to allow the water to once again bead from the garment.
